Palworld Celebrates 40 Million Players Ahead of Major Release

After an impressive journey in Early Access, Palworld is gearing up for its full 1.0 release, continuing to capture the attention of gamers worldwide. As of today, this innovative game developed by Pocketpair has surpassed 40 million players, highlighting its popularity across platforms.

Scheduled for a July 10 launch, the 1.0 release brings the excitement to new heights. While the player count is staggering, it’s important to note that this does not necessarily equate to 40 million units sold. Palworld has benefited from a presence on various console subscription services, including Xbox Game Pass, which helped boost its reach and engagement.

Palworld’s Evolution and Expansion

Since its Early Access debut in January 2024, Palworld has been a record-breaking phenomenon. Takuro Mizobe, CEO of Pocketpair, remarked on the surprise revenue generated by the game, which prompted strategic moves to further expand the brand.

Pocketpair’s partnership with Sony, resulting in the formation of Palworld Entertainment, marked a significant step in expanding the game’s universe. The expansion strategy included a launch on the PlayStation 5, broadening the game’s appeal even further.

Controversies and Legal Challenges

Despite its success, Palworld faced comparisons to Pokémon, particularly regarding certain creature designs. Instead of pursuing typical copyright litigation, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company opted for a patent approach, seeking an injunction and damages for alleged design similarities. A verdict is anticipated later this year, which will be crucial for both parties.

Meanwhile, Pocketpair remains grateful for the community’s unyielding support over the past 2.5 years. The company expressed its appreciation in a social media post, thanking players for their dedication and enthusiasm.

What to Expect with Palworld 1.0

John “Bucky” Buckley, who leads publishing and communications at Pocketpair, hinted at substantial updates with 27 pages of patch notes for the 1.0 version. Although existing players can retain their current progress, Bucky recommends starting anew to experience the game fully, given the extensive changes.

“Players can continue their existing saves if they wish, as we want to respect the time and effort you have put in,” Bucky noted. “However, due to numerous changes to the game, including overhauls to mechanics and new content, we believe starting a new character offers the best experience of Palworld!”
